Many times I've been hanging shirts and come to a wire hanger with the somewhat iconic "WE (HEART) OUR CUSTOMERS" paper wrapping. I knew I would eventually rip it off and assimilate it, but I let it remain there and the idea roll about in the back of my mind. Today I took it off, tore it to a nice shape, and glued it down. I felt the man with the camera from a vintage ad would work well. He was first upright, but then realized it was more aesthetically pleasing and eye catching if he was inverted. I shuffled through my boxes of clippings, looking for red. I came across several red classic cars, trains, and boats. I almost went with the boat. What man doesn't love his boat? Or, at the very least, his desired boat? I settled on this red DeSoto. I liked how the perspective draws the viewer to the woman joyfully looking back, then on to the heart. From the heart, the viewer catches the a glimpse of the chair, leading the eye up (down) the length of the man photographing the lady. A circular composition has been created. I pay close attention to how all the elements work together when I compose a collage. Elements should play off each other visually and/or intellectually.

Texas Bluebonnets https://www.aaronroeart.com/blog/2016/4/texas-bluebonnets There's a certain excitement that comes with the bluebonnets in spring. Texans are proud of our state wildflower. Fields suddenly unfurl these beauties, drawing out Sunday drivers and young families snapping pics of their little ones. Then, as quick as they came, the bluebonnets are gone. Perhaps that's why Texans are so eager to get out among the bluebonnets.

Here is one of our favorite young families taking in the bluebonnets on a rather overcast morning.

Some things are just too pretty not to taste.

Lovely yellow fields are also common this time of year.

Vibrant yellow fields are also a welcomed sight.

Enjoy the spring while you can.

Capturing a Moment https://www.aaronroeart.com/blog/2016/2/capturing-a-moment JoAnn here. :-)

I wanted to share a little behind the scenes action with you all.  First of all, we love photographing this family.  We've been documenting their family's growth for four years now!

But while Aaron was working on the nestling of the little one in a tree with Mom (featured in the previous blog post "Nestling"), behind the scenes, Dad was entertaining Big Brother by walking him on the bridge railing. It was a modern Norman Rockwell scene unfolding before my eyes.  I couldn't help but take photos of the action and they turned out so very cute. They epitomize the complex relationship between dads and their boys. I hope you enjoy!

Here are some helpful tips for your senior portrait session:

  1. Wear clothes that represent you. If you play a sport, bring your uniform (if you can). If you're in AG, bring your blue jacket.  If you like to make a fashion statement, bring your swaggest outfit. In fact, bring a couple of different outfits and ways to change up your looks. Scarves for girls and jackets for boys work great. Try to avoid loud patterns and colors that wash out your skin and make you look like an extra from Fear of the Walking Dead.
  2. Bring some props. Bring that trumpet, chess board, or copy of Catcher in the Rye. If your car is your "bae", ask to shoot some portraits with it. In twenty years, you'll want to look back on these portraits and think, "Wow, I really thought that was cool??"
  3. Pick a location that has lots of possibilities. A park is great, but a park with a nearby brick wall is even better. Think about shooting portraits at your school and one other location to get variety.
  4. Don't be afraid to mix it up. You may think a pose feels awkward, but try it...it may turn out goals. Your photographer will give you some guidance on how to get those traditional, "mom-approved" shots and then those awesome ones you'll want to share with your friends.
  5. Choose a photographer you're comfortable with. Talk to your potential photographer ahead of time and see if you connect. The best photographers will make you feel comfortable so you'll enjoy the experience and laugh a lot. Then you'll end up with some awesome senior portraits!

We here at Aaron Roe Photography would love to be your senior portrait photographer! We'll work with you to make sure you're comfortable and get the shots you want. Or if you have no idea what you want, we'll throw some ideas out there and see what you like.

We have a senior portrait special right now. Check out the details here.

A Young Natural https://www.aaronroeart.com/blog/2015/8/young-beauty Between raising kids, photography, and finishing up artworks for an upcoming exhibit, I finally found some time to start editing some pics I took at an Audrey Woulard workshop I attended in April. Here's one of my favorites. This young lady's captivating eyes drew compliments from several of the photographers. I like the simple composition in this photo. The vibrant blue background accentuates her eyes, and her hair against the dark wood creates a subtle transition.

Backyard Wildlife: Green Anole https://www.aaronroeart.com/blog/2015/5/backyard-wildlife-green-anole We enjoy the wildlife in our own backyard. The well supplied bird feeders have drawn many cardinals, doves, sparrows, bunnies scavenging for spilt seeds, and some sneaky squirrels. Recently I was able to catch a few photos of a beautiful green anole out on the prowl. Interesting creatures are all around you.

Cushing Wine Cellar https://www.aaronroeart.com/blog/2015/4/cushing-wine-cellar I recently met up with Heidi Cushing, wine consultant and owner of Cushing Wine Cellar, for a business photo shoot. Heidi provides personalized wines and gifts, private wine tastings, and home delivery of handcrafted artisan wines. She’s friendly and wine savvy. Photography sessions like these hardly seem like work.  Heidi and her family were delightful. And the couple of bottles she sent home with us were delicious.

Ana, Class of 2015 https://www.aaronroeart.com/blog/2014/10/ana-class-of-2015 It's the perfect time of the year for high school senior portraits. The weather is cooling down here in Texas--with the occasional spike into the high 80s just to remind us where we are. Here are a few recent photos of the lovely high school senior Ana, taken at the Adriatica in McKinney. I'm eager to shoot more portraits in this European village styled location.

Location Matters https://www.aaronroeart.com/blog/2014/9/location_matters A great location can definitely enhance a portrait session. Urban sites, with their various textures and colors, architecture and strong lines, offer the photographer and model a range of backdrops in a relatively small area. The long, empty roads, open fields and vast sky of the countryside can convey thoughtful solitude. A weathered barn or rusty tractor reminds us of the presence of the past and the passing of time. The woods have a mysterious atmosphere. The woods are where the stories we were told as children happened. Whether bare in the winter or thick with foliage, there is still a sense of something out beyond our sight.

Most of us have access to these places. You may have some together or within walking distance. One thing I really like about shooting in the Fort Worth Stockyards is the availability of urban and rural settings all in one place. Parks may have a mixture of wild nature and manicured gardens. Remember, as the photographer you choose what your audience sees. Maybe you've seen an example where a very neat and tidy portrait is presented. Looking at the image, you might assume the photographer has a large studio to work in. However, the next photo you are shown is taken from a wider angle, and you can see the model is surrounded in clutter. Frame the shot. If you aren't aware of the layout of the Fort Worth Stockyards, then you probably wouldn't know there is a parking lot just out of sight to the right of the photo below.

No doubt, I like to get out and move around when I'm on a shoot. But what if for some reason your options are limited? Should you just wait for a better time? No way. Catch what's going on now. Train yourself to compose in tight spots, navigating the distractions. A good portrait can be achieved even in your own front yard. Here are a few taken in front of you home.

Back to School in the Fort Worth Stockyards https://www.aaronroeart.com/blog/2013/8/back-to-school-in-the-fort-worth-stockyards

Last Thursday evening was spent in the Fort Worth Stockyards on a photo shoot with this young man and his mom. They were taking advantage of the Back to School special I'm offering through September 15, 2013.

The Stockyards offer a wide variety of settings within walking distance, and we sampled only a small portion. I'm eager to schedule more sessions there and explore the possibilities.

He was a little camera shy at first, but he did great.

We heard a soft meowing while walking on the railroad tracks, then this friendly feline popped up from beneath to say hello.

If you haven't visited the Fort Worth Stockyards, you really should spend a day seeing the sights and enjoying the hospitality.

Back roads in Burleson, Texas https://www.aaronroeart.com/blog/2013/7/backroads-in-burleson-texas I grew up with weekend drives through the back roads of Johnson and Hood County. I learned to drive on the these roads between Godley and Acton. Asphalt would give way to gravel, then back again. The white dust of the gravel would our green Dodge van. From a distance, the trail of dust kicked up would look like the Road Runner was cutting a path through the cedars. All those roads are paved now.

Today I drove through some back roads of Burleson and Joshua. My excuse was to get my nap-resistant 3 year old to sleep.  Back roads offer some interesting subjects. Here are a couple of photos I snapped along the way.
